Tutoring

Tutorial Program Overview

We have offered tutoring services since their start in the 1970s. The service in its current configuration was established to support all students at the University of Maryland since 1986.

Tutoring is one of the numerous ways our office fulfills its purpose of giving students the opportunity to excel academically. This is a free, walk-in tutorial program that covers most key courses in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, and some Foreign languages, among other courses.

In addition, we offer two Study Groups, in Statistics and in Calculus.

How to receiving tutoring
  1. Ask for the Tutorial Program staff at the front desk or take a Tutorial Program brochure from the table located by the front desk. We are located at 1101 Hornbake Library (South Entrance).
  2. While at the front table fill out the OMSE Tutorial Request Form and place it in the tray as indicated.
  3. Pick up a tutoring schedule and check the time and day of the class you are looking for.
  4. Learn the name of the tutor for the courses you are interested in reviewing. This helps to find him or her faster!
  5. Walk in at any time to receive the tutoring with knowledgeable and experienced fellow students. Or …free tutoring in the classes you need.

We offer a tutoring service as part of our efforts toward ensuring academic success to all undergraduate students. Tutoring is free, walk-in, and supports most key courses in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and many others. In addition, we offer two Study Groups--one in Statistics, and another in Calculus.

Tutors are upper class students who have earned a minimum of B+ in a particular course and feel comfortable explaining the material to other peers. Many tutors are former tutees who became tutors in their junior or senior year.

To become a tutor, a student must fill out an application form; pass an interview; and attend an orientation workshop. Tutors choose their schedule according to their own classes' schedule.

Come and visit our suite, where you will find students working with each other in tables around the unit and in our conference room.

If we do not have tutorial for a class you are interested in, let us know and we will do our very best to find a solution for you. We can also refer you to other places on campus where you can find a tutor.
